Laguna Hanson Run

This 200-mile round trip begins at the Perfect Adventures meeting spot in El Cajon, CA and returns north at the Tecate border crossing.

This is an easy and very affordable first trip into Baja for overlanders that have never been south of the border. Laguna Hanson (Parque Nacional Constitución de 1857) is located in the pine forests of the Sierra de Juárez mountain range in northern Baja California. The park is one of the seven national parks in Baja and is an important preserve for many native wild animals like bighorn sheep and mule deer. This national park also is home to coyote, cougar, fox, rabbit, hawk, and quail to name a few. This will be primitive Baja camping adventure at over 5,000 feet (1500 meters) with pit toilets nearby. High clearance truck or SUV needed on this trip. Four-wheel drive is great but not necessary unless lots of mud or snow. Cars like higher clearance Subaru’s can do this trip. Eighty miles of this 200-mile round trip route will be off-road and takes us through one of the most beautiful regions of northern Baja.

DAY 1

Drivers’ meeting, radio check and intros. Our first stop is a little town in northern Baja where we will have authentic comida Mexicana (Mexican food.) We’ll pick up local firewood for our weekend in this area. After lunch, enjoy a scenic drive on dirt roads into the pine tree forest of Parque Nacional Constitución de 1857 (aka Laguna Hanson). If time permits, we may stop at our amigo’s rancho on the way to our camping spot. Horseback riding at this rancho can be reserved ahead of time. Relax and take in the fresh pine air from nature. It’s time to unwind.

Day 2

Buenos Dias! Time for a hearty desayuno (breakfast) Mexicano style. This year the lake water level is up due to our recent winter rains! It’s fun to walk or bike around the lake to explore the area. Do yoga, mediate, read, hike or relax – you choose your fun time. Enjoy the Sunday night group potluck with a Baja cowboy western theme.

Day 3

Hiking among the pines and boulder scrambling is a fun experience and the views are worth it at the top of the hill. Rock climbers will enjoy this northern Baja location. Your guide can let you know the best locations. Kicking back by the campfire and taking in the cool mountain vibe is an option each night. This will be an opportunity to share your favorite overlanding or travel story with the group. Stargazing & smores anyone?

Day 4

Get in your last walk then we pack up gear and make a slow “run for the border”. Expect a 2+ hours or more border wait at Tecate.
